First, a salute to the Mahatma, and a quote:
"I shall work for an India...in which there shall be no high class and low class of people, an India in which all communities shall live in perfect harmony. There can be no room in such an India for the curse of untouchability or the curse of intoxicating drinks and drugs."
Not sure how effective the new ban on smoking in public places in India will be, but they picked a good day for putting it into effect, and I hope it works and can be extended to the items he's referred to specifically here. This is one of my favorite Gandhi-ji pictures, titled 'The Leader Leads'.
The final quarter of the year promises to be Bollywood's best, and October should do well in kicking things off. The movies I am looking forward to, in addition to Ramchand Pakistani, which was delayed from its initial release date in August (#3 in this post has more commentary):
1. Kidnap starring Imran Khan, Minissha Lamba, Sanjay Dutt. I'll hope to share my thoughts on this over opening weekend. Saving my music review for then as well, because the soundtrack is only decent as a standalone product. If Gabbar Singh were to critique Pritam Chakrobarty's music, his question before listening to each album might be: Abe O Pritam...kitne dhun churaaye? (how many tunes did you steal?). Alas, the answer isn't zero...again. But there's enough in it to look forward to. Sanjay Dutt will be the best actor by far in the film, but they've made it clear this is Imran's film. Some promo stills remind me of Aamir Khan in Ashutosh Gowariker's Baazi (1994). Should be interesting. Here are a couple of posts on the film. Official website: kidnapthefilm.com
2. Heroes starring Salman Khan, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Sohail Khan, Dino Morea, Mithun Chakrobarty, Preity Zinta, Riya Sen, Amrita Arora, and others. The one movie I'm hoping does better than most expect it to do -- the plot is intriguing, and it should be fun to see Salman and Preity like this! Official website: heroes.erosentertainment.com
3. Roadside Romeo, an animated film that is a collaborative effort between Yash Raj Films and Walt Disney Studios. While the title sounds a lot less appealing to me than, say, Toonpur Ka Superhero (that's an Ajay Devgan project), it should be worth checking out, if only for the voices being provided by Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, and Javed Jaaferi! They're all good comedians (especially Javed), and the film promises to be fun. Official website: This link.
4. Honorable Mention, if only for the cast, goes to two films I'm not expecting too much from:
Golmaal Returns, starring Ajay Devgan, Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Shreyas Talpade, Kareena Kapoor, Amrita Arora and Celina Jaitley. It's a good cast, and it'll likely be a hit. But I didn't think much of the original, and I'm willing to bet the best this does is give Singh Is Kinng a run for its money, which means it will do well financially. A wild-card for the month, which could just work if they strike a balance between clean and nonsensical but tasteful comedy, it could be rather fun. Official website: golmaalreturnsfilm.com
Drona, starring Abhishek Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra, a film by Goldie Behl. Because the name 'Goldie' wasn't enough, we have tons of reminders of the person in the form of gold, lots of it, all over! So I was excited with the superhero/fantasy theme, and its music is pretty decent. Given the theme, I was hoping we'd get He-Man and Zelda (from The Legend of Zelda, borderline religion for Nintendo video-gamer kids from the 1980s), instead we got this...
Abhishek Bachchan has had his chances over the years, and we know he'll keep getting roles and decent scripts no matter how his films fare. Some of us have said, "Abhi nahin to kabhi nahin" and moved on, though. Yet, he might just prove there can indeed be not so fit and in-shape superheroes in the world (he gives me hope!), for which part of me is secretly looking forward to the outcome.
