Unforgettable Week: Lyrics and translation of my favorite Amitabh song, O Saathi Re

Like how Salman Khan and Amitabh Bachchan are saying similar things in their recent blog posts here and here respectively. God Tussi Great Ho on August 15 should be interesting. Sorry, Vancouver Bollywood fans. We learned today that the stop of the Tour there was canceled.

The film Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978) starred Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Raakhi, Rekha, and Amjad Khan, had music by Kalyanji-Anandji, and lyrics by Anjaan. Each song in the film was memorable, but if I had to pick one, it would be my all-time favorite Amitabh song, O Saathi Re.

The song begins about three minutes into the video, and the essence of the little talk at the outset is that the speaker (Sikandar) is being praised and rewarded for a charitable contribution to orphans. After noting that had he known he would be praised in public, that he wouldn't be at the event, he suggests that he hasn't done anyone a favor, since he spent his life as an orphan. And in all his loneliness, it is this song that he cherishes and trusts for cheer when most needed. It is a song that he was introduced to by a companion (who she is, is anyone's guess). Here it is then:

Here are the lyrics and my translation:

What a beautiful song! There's nothing Bollywood music for putting a lump in your throat. :-)

Oh dear, LOL...I know, I know, but if you listen to this repeatedly, the lump in the throat ceases to do any harm :) It is a remarkable song, from a remarkable film.

Adab theBollywoodFan. Thanks for the translation. Those orphans really have a way with words. I was fixated on this song and did 3 days of O Saathi Re on my blog a while back. One of the versions is a different one (same title but from Omkara), but still beautiful.

Long live orphans and all the best,

This is a beautiful song, and we must compliment your taste, Bollywood fan. Thanks for the translation, it really helps some of us, you know. You should have a list of all translations, that would help too.
