Asha Bhosle week: Tabu in Mujhe Rang De

Part 2 of 5 of Asha Bhosle Week on my blog this week, leading up to her concert on Friday. This is my chance to share my favorite Asha Bhosle songs, a tough ask of myself because I am restricting the selection to only five songs, which is somewhat unfair when one thinks about it, given that she has over 12,000 songs to her credit. In any case, today's featured song is Mujhe Rang De (which means: 'color me') from the movie Thakshak (1999) and stars Tabassum Fatema (Tabu) and Ajay Devgan. Sung by Asha ji, with music by A. R. Rahman and lyrics by Mehboob. Enjoy Tabu's mesmerizing performance!

BollywoodFan, 5 Asha songs is quite a goal. Just how to cut them down to 5?
I have never seen movie Thakshak, but have heard this great song and seen the clip here. Tabu and Ajay means I must see it. One of the tangents I’ve gone off on on my blog is the talent shows in India. One of my favorite contestants is Anwesha Dutta Gupta and here is her version of Mujhe Rang De:

I posted 2 other of little Anwesha’s covers here-

Another A. R. Rahman tune too:

Thank you Sita-ji. The links are great, and the songs and voices rather beautiful!

You are absolutely correct about five songs being overly restrictive (one of my friends thinks five albums wouldn't be enough)! I figured I could use some time this week to share my excitement for the upcoming concert, and of course my selections are biased and mostly restricted to an era that is almost unanimously not considered her best (and probably for good reason). The song Dum Maaro Dum is one such example.

I haven't seen Thakshak either, and shall hope to see it some time. It also stars Rahul Bose and the late Amrish Puri.

I know! When I read that "Thakshak" has Tabu and aslo stars Amrish Puri I added it to my ever growing "to watch"document on my desktop. I got NUTS over Amrish! I love it when he goes off. Fabulous! And I've also enjoyed Rahul Bose's work, though only seen him in 3 things. I have some screen images from "Koyla" that I'll have to post soon with some particularly evil pix of Amrish.

All the best,
Sita-ji

Speaking of Amrish Puri...his performance as Mogambo in Mr. India (1987) was unbelievably good. Sample this scene. If you haven't seen the movie, I would highly recommend it. Anil Kapoor was great, and Mogambo struck fear in the heart of every '80s child, much like Gabbar Singh did in the '70s.

Excellent clip! Hail Mogambo!

I like how bad he was in "Dance, Dance"

Sukriya for that clip.,

Thanks for sharing Sita-ji. It's funny how we remember some of the actors for some very specific performances. Mogambo will forever be my favorite. And perhaps the Amrish Puri scene in DDLJ toward the beginning, at the gas station, with the pack of drinks and SRK!

Of course I remember that scene at the gas station and even more so that slap fest at the climax of the movie. I LOVE Amrish!
