Asha Bhosle Week: Parveen Babi in Jawani Jaan-e-Mann

Part 5 of 5 of Asha Bhosle Week on my blog this week, leading up to her concert tonight. Almost there. Today's featured song is perhaps the first Asha Bhosle song I recall listening to with specific knowledge of the vocalist. For that reason alone, it makes it ahead of the others considered (i.e. Kahin Aag Lage from Taal, the Rangeela title song, and an oldie in Kaahe Tarsaaye from the film Chitralekha, which I still think has to be among the best classical songs in a movie).

Here is Jawani Jaan-e-Mann from one of my Top 10 favorite movies of all time, Namak Halaal (1982), starring Parveen Babi, Smita Patil, Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, and Waheeda Rahman. With music by Bappi Lahiri and lyrics by Anjaan. Parveen Babi does what she will always be remembered for -- steal the show with tremendous on-screen presence. Fantastic!

Is it just me, or does the beginning to this song (with the voice) reminds me of the beginning to the Jungle Mix in the soundtrack to Kaal (2005). What with the seductive voice and all...
