Sarah Jane Dias -- coming to Bollywood?

The recently concluded Miss World pageant crowned the home contestant -- Miss China -- as the winner. Read about it here. Miss India (Sarah Jane Dias, pictured below) was not in the top three. But we acknowledge that it is quite an achievement for a contestant to make it this far. Of course, every year, the winner and runner-up of Miss India represent India in the Miss Universe and Miss World pageants respectively. And there is a Bollywood connection.

It is a trend we are all used to. A successful modeling career is probably the best way to enter Bollywood for those who are not fortunate to be related to someone in the industry. Whether or not this is the ideal way to make an entry is questionable (I, for one, am opposed to mere modeling success translating to on-screen presence), but the flip side is that we would likely not have had the following actresses who were either winners or runners-up in Miss India contests in the past.

Here are some names (since 1980) that stand out for their Bollywood careers. Am I glad or what that I cared to look at the list, for I shall likely not complain as much about the lack of quality of acting of these celebrities. Check out the class of 2000. And an impressive track record, wouldn't you say?

  • 1980: Sangeeta Bijlani
  • 1981: Meenakshi Sheshadri
  • 1984: Juhi Chawla
  • 1985: Sonu Walia
  • 1992: Madhu Sapre
  • 1993: Namrata Shirodkar
  • 1993: Pooja Batra (2nd runner-up)
  • 1994: Sushmita Sen
  • 1994: Aishwarya Rai (runner-up)
  • 1997: Diana Hayden
  • 2000: Lara Dutta
  • 2000: Priyanka Chopra (runner-up)
  • 2000: Gayatri Joshi (2nd runner-up)
  • 2000: Dia Mirza (3rd runner-up)
  • 2001: Celina Jaitley
  • 2002: Neha Dhupia
  • 2004: Tanushree Dutta
  • 2004: Sayali Bhagat (runner-up)

Meenakhsi Sheshadri is one of the most elegant actresses of bollywood films of the 80s and 90s. She was well educated and the good conception of the roles had helped her to understand the characters she had played.

Agreed, Souvik. Thank you for the comment. My favorite Meenaxi movie was Ghar Ho To Aisa, opposite Anil Kapoor. I think it was in 1990. Typical family flick, but Meenaxi was in great form in that one.
