Om, Shanti, and Om...an awesome threesome

Finally saw Om Shanti Om about three weekends ago. Cannot believe I had to wait until the end of November to do so. Talk about the Bollywood supply chain in Miami being quite poor. These are the after-effects. Oh well. On to the movie...really liked it (as opposed to loved it).

What worked in Om Shanti Om was the timing associated with the comic relief. Several scenes are well put together. Consider the one in which the 'extras' Shah Rukh Khan and Shreyas Talpade shout 'Bhaago!'. How about the one in which they discuss the relevance of the typical costume for a superhero, with the underwear worn outside!? Add to that a decent plot with both Deepika Padukone and Arjun Rampal putting in rather remarkable performances, and you have the makings of a hit film.

The love story that underlies the plot, from start to finish, is very well executed. No surprises given that that is Shah Rukh Khan's acting niche. I thought Deepika Padukone did very well too -- she didn't look like a rookie at all. Kudos to SRK for spotting her!

A favorite moment was the sentence from Maine Pyar Kiya (MPK, 1989) and the appearance of the cap saying 'Friend' with the two pigeons, also from MPK. That was classic!

As for the music, Aankhon Mein Teri still wins my best song of the film award hands down. Main Agar Kahoon is another good one. Among the others, I thought some were forced (Dard-e-disco, for instance), but there is enough good in the film overall to overlook the placement of the music.

All in all, a well-above-average film, and one that deserves four stars for its entertainment quotient, which ranks very high.

For most of the first half of the Fall, much was made of the Om Shanti Om versus Saawariya battle that played out starting around Diwali time. I have always been of the impression that more than one movie released the same day can be good; such is a healthy attitude for the film industry and its fans. I was always quite certain I would have positive things to say about both films. Om Shanti Om held up its end of the deal.

Movie Rating: **** (EXCELLENT)

My Classification: UA/PG (for some mildly violent situations, mostly clean otherwise)

Watch it if: you enjoy masala entertainers. You'll get a good laugh while at it. Do not look for content that makes sense -- this is as good a masala entertainer as you will find, but remove your thinking caps and you will have fun!
