The work of others, and a question of integrity

One would hope any copyright issues related to the work of others are resolved before being included in any promo or trailer. That was not the case with the song Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves (American rock band of the 1980s) being used in the initial promo of the film Jab We Met. Good to see that the song was removed, but seriously, it should not have been included with even one trailer to begin with if the original producers could not be reached. Here is to more preventive than corrective work on behalf of the Bollywood community!

Director Imtiaz Ali reluctantly admits the song was pulled off. "It went perfectly with Kareena's character and the film’s mood. In fact I didn't only want to use it in the first promo but all the promotional campaigns and also as part of the background music in my film."

Rather than risk a sticky copyright-infringement situation, Imtiaz decided to pull the plug on the track. This latest incident of copyright consciousness in Bollywood is part of a larger campaign to acknowledge and legitimize all derived works in Hindi cinema...
