Anwar - potential wasted?

I was curious to watch Anwar ever since I first listened to the songs Aankhen Teri (a beautiful love song) and To se Naina Laage (Shilpa Rao's first hit song in Bollywood, I believe). Saw the film today, starring Siddharth Koirala, Vijay Raaz, Nauheed Cyrusi, Hiten Tejwani, Manisha Koirala, and Rajpal Yadav. Enjoyed the first 30 minutes or so because of the music and art direction. But talk about beating a dead horse and being redundant within the same film. Redundantly redundant is how I would describe it.

And while I try not to be too harsh to the film, I cannot help but express my disappointment at the final product. There was so much potential wasted. It's almost like every character in the film says 'and I want my own little story in this one too'.

While I appreciate the emotion that went into making this film (communal strife rules over a love triangle here), I am disappointed in the approach to the storyline and the portrayal of frustration. Not a film I would recommend.

Movie Rating: *1/2 (BELOW AVERAGE)
If you, like me, enjoyed the soundtrack, stick to listening to it. Watching the film might just make you want to avoid future listening.

My Classification: R (for language)

I watched this solely for the gorgeous "Maula Mere Maula" song, but couldn't finish it. Redundantly redundant is a great way to describe it!

Hi Emily, and happy new year! 'Maula Mere Maula' is a fantastic and indeed gorgeous song. It was very testing to see 'Anwar' in its entirety, and you're probably better off not having finished it. :)

Cheers.
